Australia Rooftop Solar Hits 28.GW as Home Batteries Take Off

Australia’s rooftop solar story just reached another major milestone — and it’s one worth celebrating.

By the end of 2025, Australia’s total rooftop solar capacity climbed to 28.3 GW, spread across more than 4.3 million homes and businesses nationwide. According to the Clean Energy Council’s (CEC) latest Rooftop Solar and Storage Report, small-scale solar continues to play a central role in powering the country, even as the market begins to shift toward energy storage.

Rooftop Solar: A National Powerhouse

In 2025 alone, Australians installed 2.6 GW of new rooftop solar, with 1.5 GW added in the second half of the year. While installation volumes eased compared to the record-breaking highs of 2024, rooftop solar still accounted for 14.2% of Australia’s total electricity generation in the second half of the year — up from 13.4% the year before.

To put this into perspective, Australia’s combined rooftop solar capacity now exceeds the nation’s entire coal-fired generation fleet, which stands at approximately 22.5 GW.

As CEC Chief Executive Jackie Trad put it, Australia’s largest power station is no longer a single facility — it’s spread across millions of rooftops.

A Market Shift: From Panels to Power Storage

While rooftop solar remains strong, 2025 marked the first year since 2020 where annual installations fell below 300,000 systems. Rather than signalling a slowdown, this points to something more important: the market is maturing.

Households are increasingly turning their attention to home batteries to store excess solar, reduce grid reliance, and protect against rising electricity prices and outages.

And the numbers are extraordinary.

Home Battery Uptake “Straps on a Rocket”

Driven by falling battery costs and strong government incentives — including the federal $7.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries program launched in July 2025 — Australia’s distributed storage market has exploded.

In just six months:

  • 183,245 home batteries were installed
  • Installations were four times higher than the same period in 2024
  • The total number of home batteries nationwide reached 454,753 systems

Remarkably, Australians installed as many batteries in the second half of 2025 as they had in the previous five years combined.

This shift marks a turning point: solar is no longer just about generation — it’s about control, resilience, and energy independence.

Beating Expectations for the Future

The rapid growth of rooftop solar has already outpaced forecasts. The CEC now expects small-scale solar capacity to exceed the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) 2030 projections by around 1 GW.

AEMO’s 2024 Integrated System Plan projected 36.1 GW of distributed PV by 2029–30, requiring annual installations of about 2.5 GW. Over the past five years, Australia has averaged 2.7 GW per year, comfortably exceeding that pace.

What This Means for Australian Homes and Businesses

For households and businesses, the message is clear:

  • Rooftop solar is now a mainstream energy source
  • Batteries are becoming the next essential upgrade
  • Smart energy systems will define the next phase of Australia’s clean energy transition

At My Energy Group, we see this as an opportunity — not just to generate clean power, but to help Australians take control of their energy future through smarter solar, storage, and energy management solutions.

The rooftop revolution is no longer coming.
It’s already here — and it’s accelerating.
